Your oven and range hood definitely get a workout this time of year. Keeping your oven clean can help keep it running at peak performance. Be sure to wipe away any spills or stuck on food once the oven cools. If you intend to self-clean your oven, do it at least two weeks ahead of the big day. Sometimes after self-cleaning ovens fail to work. Cleaning two weeks ahead leaves time for repairs to be made. Keep your burners clean as well and check them regularly. Damaged burners will not cook efficiently and are potentially unsafe. And speaking of safety, never use a gas oven to heat your house. If your oven temperature isn’t accurate or your burners aren’t functioning properly, schedule professional appliance repair and have them replaced if necessary.

Range Hood

It is also important to keep your range hood vents clean for it to work properly. If you allow the grease and cooking debris to build up and block the vents, smoke and unpleasant food odors will permeate your home. In extreme cases, dirty hood vents can cause fires. Keep your home safe and odor-free by regularly cleaning your hood. Consult your owner’s manual or appliance repair professional for the best cleaning method for your particular model.

Dishwasher

During the holidays there seems to be an endless supply of dirty dishes, pots, pans and utensils. Proper usage and regular maintenance can help you avoid an inconvenient dishwasher malfunction. Don’t overload the dishwasher. This could potentially block the rotating sprayers and cause damage. Large, bulky items may not fit in the machine properly. It is best to wash these by hand.

Don’t leave excess food on your dishes when loading the dishwasher. Scraping your dishes first will get your dishes cleaner. It will also help prevent dishwasher traps from becoming clogged and potentially causing the machine to malfunction or break down altogether. Clean your dishwasher regularly, about once a month. Run it empty with a cup of white vinegar or the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning agent.

There are also a couple of easy ways to boost your dishwasher’s performance. Run the hot water in the kitchen sink before you start the dishwasher. This will ensure that hot water will enter the dishwasher promptly, providing better cleaning. Be sure to select the correct cycle for the type of load you are washing. Using the incorrect cycle or using the same cycle all the time can minimize your dishwasher’s performance or cause unnecessary wear and tear.

Refrigerator

With all the holiday cooking and baking, you’re bound to be in and out of the refrigerator quite a bit. The best way to keep your refrigerator cool is to make sure it closes properly. This will keep the cold air in and the warm air out. If your refrigerator isn’t closing properly, there could be few reasons. The most common one during the holidays is that it is overloaded and something is blocking the door. Rearrange the contents and make sure everything is clear of the door. If your refrigerator still isn’t cold enough or doesn’t seem to be closing properly, it’s time to have it professionally serviced.
