Major Appliance Damage – Are You At Fault?

Major home appliances are key components of running a household. These appliances make our lives easier and more convenient, but they also require proper care and maintenance in order to function at their best. However, there are a number of things that people do that can actually cause major appliance damage and shorten their lifespan.  Here are some examples of things that can lead to inadequate performance or damage to major home appliances.

Ignoring Manufacturer’s Instructions

Every appliance comes with a set of instructions that detail how it should be used and maintained. It’s important to read these instructions and follow them carefully, as deviating from them can lead to damage or poor performance. For example, many newer washing machines have specific detergent requirements. If you use the wrong type of detergent in your washing machine, it can lead to problems with its performance and potentially even cause damage to the internal components.

DIY Installation or Repair

While it may seem like a good idea to save money by installing or repairing your appliances yourself, it’s usually best to leave this task to the professionals to avoid major appliance damage. Appliances are complex machines with many components that must be installed and connected correctly in order to function flawlessly. Without the proper knowledge or experience to install or repair an appliance, you could end up causing damage to it or even putting yourself at risk of injury.

Not Changing Filters

Many appliances have filters that need to be regularly changed or cleaned in order to maintain their performance and prevent major appliance damage or failure. For example, the refrigerator filter helps to remove chemicals like chlorine from the water and makes it taste better. It also collects any particles in the water, which can build up in the filter over time. Changing the filter regularly can prevent it from becoming clogged and keep your fridge functioning properly. Similarly, the filter in your air conditioner helps to remove impurities from the air and keeps your home comfortable. Failing to change this filter can lead to poor air quality, decreased efficiency, and potentially cause damage to the air conditioner.

Dryer Lint Accumulation

Dryer lint is a common problem that can cause damage to your dryer and even lead to a house fire. Lint can build up in the dryer vent, reducing the airflow and making the dryer less efficient. It can also accumulate inside the dryer, leading to problems with its performance and potentially even causing a fire. The lint trap should be cleaned after each use, and the dryer vent cleaned regularly to prevent these problems.

Mold in Front-loading Washers

Front-loading washing machines are prone to developing mold and mildew due to their design. The seal around the door keeps water from escaping. However, it also creates a damp environment conducive to mold growth. The washer door should be left open after each use to allow the machine to dry out. The seal and inside of the machine should be cleaned regularly. Otherwise, the mold will build up, causing your clothes to smell bad and leading to allergic reactions or respiratory issues. Major appliance damage is also an issue if left unattended, as the mold will begin to degrade the rubber seal.

Overloading the Dishwasher

It can be tempting to fit as many dishes as possible into the dishwasher, but overloading it can actually lead to poor performance. When the dishwasher is too full, it prevents proper water circulation, and the dishes won’t get clean. Also, the dishes should be arranged so that water can reach all surfaces. Consistently overloading the dishwasher can also strain the racks, causing them to sag or break and interfere with other moving components, such as the sprayer arms  This could easily result in major appliance damage and costly repair or replacement.

Prevent Major Appliance Damage

You can avoid damage to your major appliances with proper use and maintenance. Also, be aware that disregarding manufacturer instructions or neglecting regular maintenance can void your warranty. If service is eventually needed, it won’t be covered under your warranty meaning you will have to pay for it yourself.
